A bus tour of east Bakersfield and the city’s downtown business district will be conducted on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., to showcase the city’s historic, still-functioning neon signs.
Conducted by the Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning, the tour will begin in the parking lot at Bakersfield College’s downtown campus, near the intersection of 21st Street and Chester Avenue. Participants will board a bus, with their first stop being Center Neon, where owner Nancy Carter and her brother, Dave McNamee, will explain how neon works and is formed into decorative signs.
Carter will board the bus and act as the narrator as the tour passes by 10 storefronts that feature classic examples of neon signs. The tour will conclude with a trip to the Kern County Museum on Chester Avenue, where an extensive collection of working neon signs will be illuminated, and Museum Director Jeff Nickel and curator Lori Wear will discuss the museum’s restoration efforts.
To sign up for the Bakersfield Neon Tour, go to the Levan Institute's Website. A fee of $25 person covers the cost of the bus transportation.
